The Democratic House voted to suspend Ford's $3 per barrel oil tariff for 90 days and cancel the $1 Feb 1 tax, blaming the move on expanding its own energy program. The Senate then joined in other votes affecting food stamps and the federal debt limit as Ford contemplates vetoes.
The Virginia Senate voted 33 to 7 to add eight capital offenses to the death penalty list, including willful murders of law officers and witnesses under subpoenas, and deaths in arson, rape, robbery, or burglary cases. The measure expands the existing three capital offenses and moves to the House for consideration amid other budget and policy actions.
Hearings to decide the fate of the bankrupt Diversified Mountaineer Corp. opened in U S District Court in Charleston. The four to five day session will hear financial expert testimony on competing reorganization plans from a California Alaska backed committee and from trustee Carl Duttine. Investors asked Fred Haddad to reenter the case after withdrawing an earlier bid.
The Justice Department would justify spending to the House and Senate Judiciary Committees and Appropriations panels under a bill introduced by House Judiciary Chairman Peter Rodine. The measure seeks tighter congressional scrutiny of program funding and allocations.
Congress rejected President Ford’s plan to raise food stamp costs and kept prices frozen at the January level through year end. The Senate approved 76 to 8 after House passage 374 to 38, with a companion resolution directing reforms by June 30. The move preserves current aid levels while pending bills seek to curb costs or expand benefits amid rising unemployment.
Ten thousand auto workers rallied in Washington demanding immediate action to cut unemployment and create jobs. UAW President Leonard Woodcock urged Congress to pass an 18 to 20 billion dollar tax cut, expand public service jobs, and back unemployment insurance while warning of mass street protests if demands are ignored.
Roanoke College economist Dr. E J Seifried told the State Corporation Commission during Appalchian Power Co. rate hearings that rising costs stem from over expansion to meet peak demand. He urged peak load pricing and public education to stagger daytime electricity use rather than costly metering, a stance neutral among witnesses.
Richmond doctors urge middle aged and out of shape residents not to shovel heavy snow. Dr. Robert Price says have a teen do it or slide and push the snow to avoid heart strain back injuries, windedness, or chest pain, especially in cold weather.
