Locomotive Strikes Car Injuring Burke Crossing Family

Bridgeport Man Dies Of Monoxide After Leaving Hospital
Harold Benson White 45, a Bridgeport West Virginia native and salesmen for restaurant and hotel supplies, died after leaving hospital against medical advice. Fire crews revived him when found in his apartment furnace room as coal furnace fumes backed up from a clogged stack. He collapsed at home and was dead upon return to the hospital. survivors include his widow and daughter.

Letter Carriers Honor Veteran George Shields at Dinner
Bluefield chapter of the National Association of Letter Carriers held a dinner at the Matz Hotel in Bluefield in honor of George W. Shields who retired December 31, 1954 after about 28 years as a mail carrier. Shields is 62, a Mercer County native, and father of eight. Local president George Gilliam presented a gift certificate and introduced Shields to about 30 members and wives. Rev. Frank Rowley spoke. Four other retirees were honored. postmaster Merriman Smith and other officials attended.

Confession Tied to 34 Year Old WV Slaying
Vincenzo Penino 65 known as Alfonso Salva was arrested in Lodi California for a Wellsburg West Virginia murder in 1921. Sheriff Denzel Proute said Penino admitted the crime and will await Wellsburg officers. Records show a similar indictment in 1921 that was quashed in 1924.

Henry Newman 33 faces murder charges in the shooting death of his aunt Mrs. Viola Brown 42 at their Stevensburg area farm. A 13 year old girl Mary Elizabeth Thompson was wounded and hospitalized.
