Train hits large slide near Ceredo. no injuries reported

A westbound locomotive struck a 100 by 100 foot slide west of Ceredo. The engineer jumped as brakes were applied. The engine ploughed into the slide and stopped with left side rigging torn and baggage car damaged. No injuries occurred.

Farmer Kills Man in Cards Row at Clintwood

E W Farmer, a former Bluefield resident, shot Robert L Baker three times during a card game in Clintwood Dickinson county Virginia. The incident left Baker with three bullet wounds and died within thirty minutes. Farmer surrendered to a deputy sheriff and awaits further proceedings as Clintwood townsfolk feared lynching but authorities placed guards at the jail.

The Norfolk and Western Railway reports December 1896 gross earnings of $394,092 an increase of $103,767 from December 1895 with net earnings of $31,727 up $110,780. For the quarter ending December 31, 1896 gross earnings were $2,789,974 down $14,974 from 1895, while net earnings reached $772,346 up $184,771.
