A West Virginia house committee pushes a plan to re assess coal and oil lands to reflect recent development. The measure could add about 50 000 annually to state income and would tax city properties at true value. The bill faces debate amid governor veto threats on related charter changes.
A local coal business collapsed after a failure in the coal trade. No assignment occurred, but the general manager and two assistants were captured and jailed. Many patrons must switch to legitimate dealers or resort to moonshine to obtain coal.
A westbound locomotive struck a 100 by 100 foot slide west of Ceredo. The engineer jumped as brakes were applied. The engine ploughed into the slide and stopped with left side rigging torn and baggage car damaged. No injuries occurred.
An 19th century style advertisement touts Hood's Sarsaparilla as the one true blood purifier. It claims it tones the system, increases appetite and strength, and removes weakness nervousness and pain. Hood's Pills are advertised as the best after dinner aid aiding digestion and preventing constipation for 25 cents.
The paper states mailed statements to out-of-town subscribers and offers corrections for any errors. It warns that those who do not remit will face an officer, while grateful to those who pay. Delinquent accounts will be stricken from subscription lists, but debts remain. The paper asserts its right to payment as stock in trade.
The regular annual meeting of Pocahontas Compact holders will convene at Masonic Hall Branwell West Virginia on Tuesday February 9 1897 at 2 oclock p m for election of a board of directors for the ensuing year and to transact further business as may properly come before the meeting Paitie Goodwitl Secretary.
In Washington on February 5, Richard R. Kenney was sworn in as senator from Delaware after debate over Dupont's claimed seat. Senator Hoar supported upholding prior decisions denying Dupont’s challenge, leaving Kenney with a prima facie title to the seat pending future merits review.
Ricamonp Va Feb 5 Judge Nathan Goff, here as a Circuit Court of Appeals judge, refutes a Washington telegram claiming he wrote a letter declining a Cabinet post yet seeking the Supreme Court. He says he never wrote such a letter nor discussed Mrs McKinley or social life in Washington. He notes possible preference for a Pacific or Ninth Circuit successor and denies Senate candidacy.
In Washington on February 5, the elections committee reports favor Boatner over Benoit in Louisiana Fifth District and Kendall over Hopkins in Kentucky Tenth District. Benoit found to have no case. Kendall upheld. House proceeds to pension bill consideration after committee actions.

John H. Driskill a Keysville to Abilene mail carrier in Carlotte county was found frozen to death about one mile from Mithville Va His body was brought to the town where medical aid was summoned but he was dead on arrival.
Feb 5 reports show Vrenver Intre Ro delivering resignations to the king as the existing cabinet quits amid economic distress. Senor Luciano de Castro to form a new cabinet with Barros Gomes likely serving foreign affairs.
E W Farmer, a former Bluefield resident, shot Robert L Baker three times during a card game in Clintwood Dickinson county Virginia. The incident left Baker with three bullet wounds and died within thirty minutes. Farmer surrendered to a deputy sheriff and awaits further proceedings as Clintwood townsfolk feared lynching but authorities placed guards at the jail.
An Episcopal Church Ladies Aid gathering at Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Darst residence featured hypnotism acts by a pro ficients and the popular Pillow Dex game. Refreshments were served, H. Jinks won a rhyme prize, and the event raised funds for church debt. A testimonial praises Chamberlain's Cough Remedy for croup and colds in children. Sold by White & Moore.
The Norfolk and Western Railway reports December 1896 gross earnings of $394,092 an increase of $103,767 from December 1895 with net earnings of $31,727 up $110,780. For the quarter ending December 31, 1896 gross earnings were $2,789,974 down $14,974 from 1895, while net earnings reached $772,346 up $184,771.
