Mercer County voters backed a $3.5 million five year school levy renewal by 77 percent in a light turnout of about one third of 30,000 registered voters. The measure passed in 74 precincts with Bluefield area strongest and no organized opposition.

Malpractice suit opens against Bluefield obstetrician in Mercer County
In Mercer County Circuit Court a malpractice case against Dr. M. S. Hajjar opened with jury selection and statements. Plaintiff Michael E. and Rita Fay Fain sue Hajjar individually and as estate co-administrators for their deceased son Jeremy Fain born Oct. 8, 1981 and died Nov. 16, 1982. The Fains allege negligent care during delivery at Bluefield Community Hospital. Hajjar contends standard of care was met. The retrial follows a deadlocked 1984 jury verdict. The trial is before Judge William O. Bivens Jr. with multiple witnesses and assertions about birth injuries and long-term impact.
