West Virginia House approves an eight member commission to study modernization of coal mining laws. Senate action expected soon. Upper chamber also passes bills on municipal revenue bonds and drunken driving evidence.
Charleston February 4 Road Commissioner H Keith Griffith criticized a legislative committee report on the Road Commission saying it ignored facts and he is preparing to publicize the department's positive actions. He denied rumors of resigning and said he will pursue rebuilding trust with taxpayers through wider media outreach.
In Beckley the murder trial of Joe Woitehovich ended in a deadlock after almost six hours of deliberation the prior night and two more hours today. Nine jurors favored a second degree murder verdict with three for voluntary manslaughter. The defendant shot Andrew Miramontez of Lubbock Texas on October 24 after Miramontez married Woitehovichs sister Nina. The case will be retried at the term opening March 41.
Secretary of Agriculture Benson told the National Editorial Association that a strong national economy is the key to farm prosperity. He argued prices can be balanced with the 1954 agricultural act and stressed that farmers must focus on production, while government supports should emphasize research education and market expansion.
President Eisenhower sent to the Senate nominations for Virginia postmasters including Robert A. Wilkinson Carrington Theodore Reese Hall Silverius C. Churn Cape Charles Homer J. Amos Chatham Walter H. Sealock Falls Church Robert K. Drumwright Jr Fork Union and Jerry W. Alford Glasgow in a February 4 transmission.
Hearing on a proposed government wage minimum for coal mines was suspended until February 14 at the request of small Virginia and Pennsylvania operators. The U S Weather Bureau forecasts slightly warmer weather across West Virginia for the next five days with total precipitation around 0.4 to 0.5 inches. North temperatures will hover near 33 degrees and the south near 36 degrees with precipitation mainly in the south late weekend and again midweek. A gradual rise is expected, followed by a colder spell around Wednesday.

Three Fayette County residents died in separate West Virginia crashes. Melvin Hurley 46 and Esther Hurley 40 of Rabson Fayette County perished in a head on collision with a vehicle carrying three North Carolina youths. Tech Sgt Charles Willis Jr 31 of Ansted was killed when his 1955 car slid off U S 19.
The FBI charged Earl L. Deans brother Ray and sister Juanita Antis with aiding his escape from a Xenia jail after he fled following a burglary indictment. Ray Dean and Juanita Antis, both in Cabell County Jail, face hearings set for February 14.
Unofficial tallies show French Premier Pierre Mendes France defeated 317 to 280 in a confidence vote. Officials expect about 45 minutes to complete the official tally as his 74 month old government faced a decisive test over North Africa policy.
The Senate approved the six year term for George G. Killinger of Marion Virginia on February 4. Killinger is a Democrat.
Prime Minister Churchill's government warned Red China that any invasion of the Nationalist held Tachens Matsu and Quemoy would threaten world peace. Foreign Secretary Eden said offshore islands form part of the PRC and warned force would endanger peace, as Churchill’s allies reacted to Chou En-lai's boycott of UN talks.
The United States rejects calling a full dress international conference outside the United Nations to negotiate a Formosa cease fire with the Chinese Communists. Chou En-lai had refused U N Security Council talks, prompting talk of Geneva style meetings in London and New York. State Department explained flouting the United Nations and press officer Suydam said the U S would not attend unless the Security Council adopted a resolution denouncing U S Formosa policy and expelling Nationalist China, conditions seen as impossible.
Two major fires in Shenandoah and Carbondale, Pennsylvania, destroyed portions of their business districts. Each blaze caused more than a million dollars in damage, leaving hundreds homeless as winds fanned flames in sub-zero temperatures. Shenandoah saw twelve stores and thirty row homes leveled, while Carbondale lost twenty eight business places and forty apartments.
The AFL warns the Amalgaamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen's Int union it risks expulsion if it admits Communists. It plans to absorb the Fur and Leather Workers International Union and move to oust the ILWU from Hawaii with a broad organizing drive led by Patrick Gorman. Meany says a meat cutters expulsion could follow at the Chicago convention.
Nationalist defenders on Quemoy and Little Quemoy dig in along trenches and foxholes as crossfire with the mainland Reds intensifies. About 300 casualties have occurred since September, with US advisers among the losses. civilians seek underground shelters as Red coastal guns threaten the island and nearby Amoy.
Former West Virginia senator Rush D. Holt remains critically ill at NIH clinic center with only a very slight improvement noted today in his cancer condition. Holt had worsened midweek after admission January 4 following his illness.
William and Mary, the second oldest U S college, will mark its 262nd anniversary next Tuesday with Charter Day ceremonies. Judge Bolitha J Laws of the U S District Court for the District of Columbia has accepted an invitation to be the chief speaker at the morning convocation.
