The legislature reports passage of a dairy and food measure amid a parade of bills. Augusta County petitions seek a new county, Taylor County seeks 4 percent interest, and several bills move through readings and committee referrals including taxation, noxious animals, and the state's dental licensing requirements.
A historical town recalls summers overrun by hogs as residents fear a new invasion. Farmers from miles around send in hogs to prey on the town, while officials push to curb the nuisance and close the pig pen menace to health and nerves. Rumors of peace and war notes mix with civic anxieties.

The Norfolk and Western Railroad to enlarge yards at Crew and Lambert's Point in Petersburg Virginia. Five miles of track at Crew and nine miles at Lambert's Point will expand handling from 2600 to 5000 coal cars. A double track Roanoke to Lambert's Point is also contemplated.
Washington Feb 4 Populist members resist Washburn Massachusetts call to abandon silver and push government money and railways. Leaders oppose a conference and warn it could fracture the party. The Mingo county grand jury, ending a four day session, handed up 250 indictments including 15 for first degree murder. Among counts were 96 carrying pistols 42 unlawful retailing and 38 obstructing road with total docket exceeding 1 000 after recent session.
Dick Fisher and Win Hewitt clashed at Jim Withers restaurant on Higginbotham avenue over a disputed pardon. Fisher struck Hewitt as the latter tried to choke a friend. both were hauled before Mayor Watkins. Hewitt paid four dollars and costs, while Fisher posted ten dollars on appeal.
Newly elected city sergeant H. O. Whitworth says he will resign after the council refused 5 percent commission on forthcoming judgment money. They demand a $15,000 bond and no commission. Sergeant Hawley holds over but won’t seek reelection without higher pay. The office is described as going a-begging.

Separate items include Williamsburg West Virginia a night watchman found dead near the track mangled by a train and Virginia twoop man E W Farmer killing Robert L Baker after a card game dispute both drinking.
James Bell Young, a locally known young man, was found unconscious on Sycamore Street near Central Park after heavy drinking. He died at the city jail and a coroner's inquest attributed death to congestion of the lungs and brains. his body was given to his mother.
A Pennsylvania railroad fatality near Kinzer station is identified as a known peddler nicknamed Connecticut Slim. The man’s home is Sanford, Connecticut, and a companion who fled spoke to Conductor Joseph Hubler of Harrisburg. The decedent reportedly shouted Well here goes before the crash. A Philadelphia address dated December 31, 1895 was found on the body.
