Emergency services in Wytheville and Dickenson County, Virginia, report only a few calls for help as a new wave of severe winter weather grips the region. Officials say power outages were worse in past storms, but this time the situation is manageable with cautious travel and reduced traffic.
Mercer County officials report six inches of snow Friday with more accumulating and forecast to reach up to 15 inches. National Weather Service predicts one to three inches more today before tapering off. Roads blocked, crews clearing major routes while shelters are on standby at Princeton and Bluefield Salvation Armies and Bluefield Union Mission. Emergency officials urge motorists to stay off roads unless essential.
Gloria B. Stewart a 59 year old Democrat from McDowell County was appointed by Gov. Caperton to fill the House of Delegates seat vacated by Delegate Ernie Moore who resigned due to failing health. Stewart worked with Tug River Health Association focusing on maternal and infant health care and family planning. Moore, a long time member first elected in 1970, resigned January 22 after 23 years in the House while confined to a wheelchair during the 1995 session.
On Monday February 5 at 5 30 p m the Bluefield Virginia Business and Professional Association will gather in the Dining Hall on the campus of Bluefield College for its regular meeting.

Frankie Ferrante founder of Frankie's La Salute in Bluewell was named the 1996 Grand Groundhog Watcher at Concord's 19th Annual Groundhog Day Breakfast. The Concord College president lauded his 50-plus years in business, community service, and the famed restaurant he built after wartime service. Ferrante, born in Mannering now McComas, opened La Salute in 1941 and retired Sept 30 1995 after guiding generations of diners and civic leaders.
