Police chase ends with truck teetering off East River Mountain
Bluefield police pursued a red Chevrolet S10 through Mercer Street and Bland Road to Route 460 and Route 598 before it skidded off a overlook ledge on East River Mountain. Officer Bailey rode in the truck as it fell. Bailey survived. Officers Lawson and Pennington were injured and hospitalized. Driver Daniel Blankenship’s condition unknown. passenger Jerry Thompson, owner of the truck, was rescued. Medevac was expected.

Bluefield Regional Medical Center officials said they had no correspondence about a Bluefield City Board letter to the city Municipal Buildings ordering it to break its July 1993 lease with BRMC Inc. The board questioned the lease’s buyout option and open public status of hospital governance.

In Richmond Virginia HB 1274 cleared an initial hurdle in the House Education Subcommittee by an 8 to 2 vote. Sponsored by Del Clinton Miller the bill would authorize the Board of Education to craft guidelines for voluntary student prayer programs and permit use of school facilities for those programs. Del Barnes Kidd credited Miller and minister Strother Smith with drafting the measure and said it would grant principals more discretion to offer voluntary school prayer programs.
