Maurice Robinson led Welch Maroon Wave with 24 points and 25 rebounds to a 73 71 overtime win over Beckley Flying Eagles on Friday night. David Ramella added 18 points for Welch.
Glen Rogers dominated Talcott 106 to 54 Friday night at Mullens. Dennis Allen led Rogers with 22 points, Dave Dishman 20, while Jeff Price and Jody Price added 12 and 11 respectively. Welch, Beckley, and other players contributed in a high scoring game as Rogers improved to 9 2 on the season.
Oceana defeats Mullens 58 to 57 as Eugene Dishman scores 29 and Ronnie Miller 14 for the Rebels. Mullens led early but Oceana finished strong. Ellison banked his only field goal with five seconds remaining as Mullens dropped to 8-5 while Oceana improved to 10-2.
Tazewell defeated John Battle 50 to 45 as John Barnes led with 21 points while Joe McGraw came off the bench to score six in the fourth quarter. Barnes was the lone double figure scorer for Tazewell, with Wilson Dean and Snodgrass adding eight apiece for John Battle. The jayvee also won 41-27.
Pocahontas rolled to a 80-49 win over Hurley as Tom Howell scored 43 points, a repeat performance this season. Joe Shrader added 12 and Jerry Sluss 11 for Pocahontas, while Hurley’s Tommy Hipps and William Stacy had 14 each. Indians improve to 9-7. Hurley sinks to 2-11.
The Associated Press reports numerous high school basketball results from Virginia and nearby areas. John Marshall beat Armstrong 76 62 while George Wythe topped Thomas Jefferson 71 57. Other notable wins include Highland Springs 83 45 over Kennedy Richmond and Amherst 48 39 over Martinsville. Multiple schools across districts like Goochland, Huguenot Academy, EC Glass, and James Wood posted decisive victories with scores ranging widely.
Herndon dominated Trap Hill 103 57 at home as David Snyder scored 32 and Kevin Sizemore 29 to pace the Indians. Snyder hit from outside and Sizemore, the area’s leading scorer, added 14 for a ninth win against three losses.
Paul Hamilton led the Coaldiggers with 16 points as John Billups added 15 and Sterret Daniels 14. Gary Hamilton grabbed 34 rebounds while Coaldiggers improved to 10-2 on the season despite Beavers top scorers Jerry Neal 16 and Jim Kiser 10.
Honolulu AP Tour sophomore Tom Watson fired a brisk seven under par 65 to take a four stroke lead midway through the $200,000 Hawaiian Open Golf Tournament as Friday rounds continued amid trade winds.
Marion held Grundy to two point advantage in the fourth quarter and pulled away for a 62 52 win at home. Brad Moore led Marion with 22 points while Pete Vance scored 18 for Grundy. Marion’s JVs also won 35 33 in a preliminary game.
Bramwell Millionaires erased a Montcalm lead in the fourth quarter to edge the Generals 60 59 at Brushfork Armory. Stanley Philpott scored 10 of his 15 in the final period while Melvin Cosby led Bramwell with 25 points. Timmy Blevins topped Montcalm with 22 as Eddie Hamlin added 12 and Perkins and Buchannon 10 each. The junior high Little Millionaires beat Montcalm 57 31 with Ron Walton scoring 18.
Oakvale Owls beat Matoaka 73 to 65 at Oakvale to improve to 12 3. Wayne Alexander led with 29 points while Steve Collins added 16 Herman Brown 14. Matoaka’s Don Snider and Mike Midkiff had 20 and 16. Collins 15 rebounds for Owls.
Princeton Tigers crushed Greenbrier East Spartans 94 73 as Opie McKinney scored a game high 29 points to reach 1 000 career high school points. Hobart Taylor added 22 and David Steele 14 for Princeton while Mike Lurber led East with 24.
Graham G-Men edged Patrick Henry 63 to 42 in overtime after a 58 all tie at end of regulation. Jerome Volkoff led Graham with 23 points followed by Darrell Saunders 16 and Ronnie Edwards 12 as Jayvees improved to 10 4.
Whitewood Indians shocked Garden Green Dragons 102 100 in overtime at Whitewood Friday night. Allen Cantrell hit a late desperation layup with three seconds left to seal the win after a 93 tie to end regulation. Darrell Maxwell led Whitewood with 30 points. Cantrell added 21 and Chester Rice 20. Danny Blankenship led Garden with 24 points.
The Jaeger Cubs beat Gilbert 72 59 Friday night at Jaeger to improve to 9 3 on the season and extend a six game winning streak. James Dawson led scoring with 19 points while Ken Powell added 15 Joe Ford 14 and John Allen 12. Les Cline topped Gilbert with 20 points and Aaron Brown added 10 as Gilbert shot 37 percent and held 30 rebounds to 56 for Jaeger.
Pineville Minutemen defeated Baileysville Rough Riders 72 to 58 on home court extending record to seven wins against six losses. Eugene Jackson led Pineville with 28 points. Bill Hall added 18, Steve Acord 12, Calvin Willard 10 as Baileysville scored 41 in the second half to close gap.
Dallas Chaparrals facing poor box office and on court results will be sold and possibly moved, an owner told the Dallas Times Herald. The decision, not naming a buyer or new city, could unfold at the ABA meeting in Salt Lake City. Attendance has averaged under 2,000 for 23 home games, largest crowd 4,200 at Memorial Auditorium.
Pulaski defeats Narrows 58 to 54 as Pulaski shoots 48 percent to Narrows 38 and makes 80 percent from the line. Pete Brown led Pulaski with 10 points while Mike Biggs paced with 14. Clyde Crewey and Stewart Reed added 12 each and Keith Rowland 10. Narrows fought back behind a four-man effort but could not overcome a first-half three-point margin.
Northfork Blue Demons rally in the second half to defeat Lenore 68 47 at Lenore. Mark Page led Northfork with 24 points followed by Harold Spencer 14 Eugene Carrington 12 and David Riley 10 in a balanced scoring effort.
