FBI and federal agents arrested eleven individuals in a nationwide gambling crackdown led from Philadelphia. A 12th suspect is in prison awaiting a detainer, with eleven more sought, tied to interstate gambling violations across Pennsylvania Massachusetts Rhode Island Louisiana Washington D C New Jersey Florida and Delaware. The ring allegedly used electronic devices to route long distance calls without toll charges.
A Bluefield jury returned a manslaughter verdict after 3 hours 20 minutes of deliberation in the slaying of Luther Gardner known as Big Lake Gardner. The defense sought to set aside the verdict April for a hearing set February 18. Gardner, a retired Norfolk and Western Railway employee, was fatally shot at The Hole.
A five year old McDowell County boy Darrell Jones died from suffocation after choking on a tiny wooden ball Wednesday afternoon. He told his mother he felt sick and collapsed in the kitchen before dying en route to Stevens Clinic Welch.
Island Creek Coal Co announced the purchase of Evans Elkhorn Coal Co of Wayland Kentucky and its affiliates. Evans Elkhorn ships about two million tons of coal annually and holds hundreds of millions of tons in metallurgical and industrial coal reserves in eastern Kentucky. The deal creates Evans Elkhorn Division and includes the Wheelwright Kentucky mine and Inland Steel property.
