In Panama Feb 1 President Obaldia and 16 assemblymen deny Rainey’s charges. A signed statement from assemblymembers says they attended Obaldia’s office meeting on Atlantic coast timber exploitation and that no one claimed Taft Cromwell or Farnham had direct or indirect involvement.
President Obaldia states his public life is beyond slander and cites a 1903 Columbia congress stance. He notes a meeting in his office without Ehrman or outsiders and denies mentioning Taft Cromwell or Farmham. He says Ward presented the railway proposal, rejected it, and a law for national railway funds passed.
In Indianapolis the Lewis administration defeated opponents led by John Walker of Illinois in a warded UMWA national presidency contest. Walker abandoned contest, claiming a packed convention. Tellers likely report a 16 000 majority, with 1 627 approving and 1 054 dissenting in a 2681 vote.
