An advertisement touts Ker Matts chocolates as a laxative quinine product. It claims easy consumption like candy and that children cry for them. The copy emphasizes relief from cold symptoms with a tasty remedy.
Boers aim to flood the beleaguered town by damming the Klip River while British forces under Buller cross the Tugela. The St James Gazette reports fighting in three places on Wednesday, continuing through the day on excellent authority.
The report says Boers plan to dam the Klip river to flood Ladysmith and attack bomb proofed cells. British forces including artillery reportedly occupy Prieska on the Orange river below Kimberley. In India the Ameer of Afghanistan seeks British support against Russia over Herat.
London reports under secretary Wyndham announced in the house of commons that Britain would deploy 180000 regular troops to South Africa within a fortnight, plus 7000 Canadian and Australian volunteers and 20000 South African volunteers. Most are already there though 18000 remain afloat. Seventy thousand are held idle at the Cape to deter a Dutch uprising.
A delegation from Atlanta and Civil War officers including Generals Howard and Gordon urged Congress to establish a national military park in the area before the House Military Committee. A Tennessee group requested an army post at Nashville and no action was taken. The Atlanta group also spoke to the Senate Military Affairs Committee.
