New York Jan 81 over a hundred families were driven from sleep into the cold by a quartet of fires in the West Side tenement district. Police and firemen rescued residents as firebugs were suspected in the early morning blazes. The worst fire damaged a boarding house run by Mrs Margaret Hobart on West Forty fifth street with minor injuries to several officers and firefighters.
Charleston January 1931 reports Senate rejected several nominations, confirming Doctor Lanham of the board of health and Game Warden Smith. Smith, visibly upset, met Governor White in an agitated state amid reports of immoral conduct motives behind the repudiation.

Corfu January 81 British cruiser Pioneer clashed with a torpedo boat destroyer near Corfu channel. Thirteen torpedo crew members are believed drowned, two bodies recovered.
