Happy stories amid 2021 gloom in Bluefield and Princeton

A year in review highlights uplifting moments from 2021. Jayden Barnes, a Princeton youth, opened a lemonade stand to fund a Dollywood trip, saving money while aiding his family and even law enforcement. In November a Lassie like rescue saw Sadie and Daisy the beagle mixes reunited after Daisy was trapped under a rock by a boulder, with help from local volunteers and animal control.

Mercer County hits 200th COVID related death milestone

Mercer County surpasses 200 COVID-19 deaths with 202 attributed to the virus per the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources. The latest DHHR report lists five Mercer County deaths including an 89-year-old man, a 67-year-old man, a 60-year-old man, a 50-year-old man and a 77-year-old woman. Across West Virginia, 31 new virus related deaths were reported Thursday. No confirmation yet on an Omicron variant presence from DHHR or county health officials.
