Deadly NYC fire blamed on child playing with stove
Officials say a preschooler playing with stove burners accidentally sparked New York City's deadliest blaze in decades, as flames trapped residents in a century-old five-story building near the Bronx Zoo. At least 12 people died, with four in critical condition, while many others escaped via fire escapes on a bitterly cold night. Investigators will probe why the apartment door did not self close, amid reports the door’s failure or obstruction may have enabled a rapid blaze spread.
