Mattis skips December trip to war zones for troops
Defense secretary James Mattis did not visit combat zones in Iraq or Afghanistan during December, a break with a 15 year-old tradition of meeting troops in holidays. He toured Kuwait, Pakistan and later visited Guantanamo Bay and bases in Florida, North Carolina and South Carolina, citing logistical challenges and to let service members have uninterrupted holidays.
