World A-2 reports that Wednesday troops intensify efforts to curb violence in Somalia as international initiatives adapt to the ongoing crisis amid regional tensions and humanitarian concerns.
In Aden two bombs struck hotels housing U S Marines en route to Somalia. One blast killed a person and wounded five, while a second outside a different hotel wounded three. Pentagon says no U S military personnel were involved. Local officials report no Yemeni casualties.
Los Angeles resident Steve Mathes won a large white teddy bear in a raffle and used it as a gift for his four year old niece in Phoenix. To save costs he bought the bear a one way ticket for 54 dollars on Delta. The bear briefly occupied seat 38E but was moved by flight attendants and Mathes and the bear ended up flying first class with Mathes.
The U S Patent and Trademark Office issued three patents for laboratory mice to Harvard University, GenPharm International, and Ohio University, the first since 1988 to recognize ownership of a genetically altered animal. Harvard researcher Philip Leder also gains a second species patent as his team created the original Harvard mouse in 1988.
The forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies with west winds 5 to 10 mph and highs in the lower 60s. Tonight will remain cloudy with lows in the upper 40s, followed by the weather package A-6.
An apparent gas ignition at Consolidation Coal Co. Amonate No. 31 mine near the Virginia West Virginia line injured five miners. The shift included 40 to 50 men. the injured operated a continuous mining machine when the flash occurred. Two rescue teams were sent from Buchanan County, and inspectors prepared to enter the mine as helicopters moved injured to hospitals in Richlands and Roanoke with one airlift to UVA Medical Center pending weather.
A Tuesday mine fire in Amonate and a December Wise County explosion highlight winter methane risks in area mines. Five miners were burned in Amonate. Officials note methane release peaks October through March and investigations are ongoing into both incidents.
David and Sharon Schoo of St Charles were jailed on 50,000 bond after being charged with felony child abandonment for leaving Nicole nine and Diana four home alone in Chicago area while on a nine day Acapulco vacation. They read their rights on arrival at O Hare, eight officers escorted them through the terminal as passengers shouted insults.
Bluefield Rotary president R W Wilkinson pressed lawmakers to address the budget deficit to preserve future opportunities for children. He urged attendees to write or call Senators Byrd and Rockefeller and Representatives Rahall and Wise, saying ongoing advocacy can influence votes. He tied fiscal health to a prosperous 1993 and shared hope for governors from both parties.
Mercer County Health Department nurse Cheryl Gaither cites CDC data showing sporadic influenza outbreaks in the United States with the Northwest as the hard hit area. November and December flu cases number 321 with 1,485 colds treated, typical for the area. Vaccination urged for the elderly and chronically ill, rest and fluids recommended for colds, seek medical attention for flu.
In Geneva the United States and Russia reach a treaty to sharply reduce their nuclear arsenals and proceed with plans for a New Year summit between President Bush and Boris Yeltsin. Eagleburger says a text is ready for the leaders and a signing timeline may follow within days.
