In a delayed Pentagon report, North Vietnamese regulars killed 48 U.S. Marines and wounded 81 in a fierce fight for the fortified village Thon Tham Khe, 419 miles north of Saigon. Marines later overran the village with naval gunfire support at first light.
Overnight lows from zero to 15 above forecast as a post Christmas snowstorm drops up to 20 inches in parts of West Virginia. The State Road Commission reports highways open though hazardous in mountains. Northeastern counties see the heaviest snow with 20 inches in Tucker, Randolph and Preston.

Roads were mostly clear Friday night with main highways open though secondary roads may require chains. Temperatures ranged from zero to 15 above in Bluefield as high pressure moved in. Mercer County Airport saw 27 to 22 above readings, and overall snow totals reached nine inches plus in 24 hours.

Sam Hollaway Bowers Jr. aged 42 and Alton Wayne Roberts 29 received 10 year federal prison terms for conspiring in the 1964 killings of civil rights workers near Philadelphia Mississippi. Also sentenced were Cecil Price 29 and Billy Wayne Posey 31 to six years each. Three-year terms went to Horace Doyle Barnette 31 Jimmy Arledge 30 and Jimmy Snowden 34.
In Lac des Isles near Mont Laurier Quebec nine of eighteen Girou vard children perished when an 11 room two story house was burned early Friday. Parents and five other children escaped by jumping from bedroom windows into six inches of snow. Four of the upstairs jumpers were injured. The family and others were hospitalized.
