Hiram D Knecht of Landgraff and chief clerk for the Empire Coal and Coke Co is dead from Brights disease. He is survived by his wife and was accompanied to Allentown Pa by William D Ord. Burial is in Allentown today.
The district reports widespread telephone and telegraph disruption due to heavy snow. Linemen work around the clock to restore lines with expected normal service within a couple of days. A Bramwell dance drew attendees including Mr and Mrs Wood and Miss Howard. Dr Thomas E Peery and J B Meek plan a Florida trip until January 15. The Ladies Auxiliary to the B of L A set a December 31 meeting at 2 PM and officers will be installed that night in the B of L E hall.
Bluefield reports four additional marriages during the Bristol holiday season of 1898 at Parson Burroughs famous mecca. The weddings featured well dressed couples and a celebratory mood as the year closed.
According to the parson, two marriages occurred Thursday at 2 p.m. Lawrence W. Massie of Bluefield W Va and Miss Mattie Dale Hartwell of Bluefield wed. Samuel Ricker and Miss Lockie Russell from Monarch Lee County Va were joined later that day. Friday saw Victor St Martin of Baltimore wed Alta Mae Tate of St Paul Russell Co Va with relatives in attendance. Arthur A Munsey of Bluefield and Maggie A Farmer of BelSpring Pulaski Co Va were united at 12:50 p.m. by Mr Burroughs.

Mont Phillips and J Tom Daniel filed contests against C V Cottle and M J Meadows after a recount in Raleigh County. Prohibitionists who voted for Cottle Meadows allegedly lacked rights to vote for them and fraud in several precincts favored Democrats. The notices claim illegal voting and suppression of Republican and Black voters.
