Raleigh man helped build Winterplace Ski Resort in West Virginia
Robert Ash, a Raleigh native who began skiing as a boy, invested $100 over 30 years ago to develop Winterplace Resort in southern West Virginia. He bought 275 acres in 1972 and guided the resort’s master plan, selling the land for $670,000 to the first owners. Ash credits the project with boosting the local economy and personal happiness, and he continues skiing into his 60s while noting plans for more resorts, including China.

Virginia wine shipping faces patchy reciprocity across states
Virginia lawmakers hoped a new license system would enable direct shipping from small wineries to 13 reciprocal states. So far California is the only state to agree, while Maryland and others restrict or ban shipping. Winery owners cite complex laws and unclear guidance as obstacles, with some shipping only to California and others not shipping at all. ABC officials say they will inform producers as more states respond.
