Mercer County Circuit Clerk Brenda Davis reports continued cleanup after a December 23 fire in the break room sparked by a shorted refrigerator. Soot stained walls and records outside the vault but the mainframe and memory stayed safe. Insurance adjusters and contractors assess damage as judges plan to return to court.
Gary Ellis former president of the failed First National Bank of Keystone filed a response to Grant Thornton LLPs cross claim in a federal civil case. Ellis argues Grant Thorntons damages if any were caused by other factors and cites comparative negligence. He also says the cross claims are barred by statutes of limitations.
A Virginia Department of Transportation spokesperson says there was just a dusting of snow in Tazewell and Bland counties and it’s already disappearing. Forecasters expect cold but dry for New Year’s Eve and Day with a chance of snow showers on Saturday, though no significant snowfall is anticipated. Even with cold temperatures continuing into January, winter precipitation remains below normal and accidents were reported statewide and on the West Virginia Turnpike but not in Mercer County.
Police searched the Bluefield Avenue Joy Mart after two black male suspects entered at about 12 57 a.m. One suspect pushed a female clerk and took an undetermined amount of cash. No injuries were reported. Lt J W Wilson and Deputy W C Wilborn led the investigations and search.
