Don Everhart of WinterPlace Ski Resort says cold weather allows snowmaking that has six of twenty slopes open with a 20 to 26 inch base. Since Dec 7 lifts carried 3,000 to 4,000 skiers and officials expect 10,000 to 15,000 by Jan 3, with yearly snowfall around 100 inches if weather cooperates.
Washington reports the National Security Council staff is seeking outside Iran experts to craft a policy avoiding arms-for-hostages mistakes. Frank C. Carlucci, to become White House security adviser, prioritizes Iran policy and hostage issues in Lebanon. Abshire will coordinate strategy on the Iran Nicaragua crisis while NSC reforms follow Poindexter fallout.
President Reagan, away from Washington on a New Year vacation, described 1986 as a very good year in his weekly radio address. He acknowledged the Iran Contra controversy briefly, pledged to uncover facts and fix errors, and praised Ben Wattenberg’s view that positive progress often goes unreported. The first family planned to return to Washington on January 2.

AP reports that hot weather rising demand for low-sulphur coal and aggressive sales lift central Appalachia production to 271 million tons through November 1986, a 4.3 percent climb, while nationwide output edges down to about 813 million tons. Virginia aims for a record 44 million tons.
