Survived by sister Mrs Lucille Kromberg of New York and sister Mrs Emma Melka of Norfolk Va. brothers Clayton J Lester of Lipscomb Ala and Russell W Lester of Bluefield. Graveside services set for today at 2 p.m. at Pine Lawn Memorial Park Pine Lawn New York.
George Washington Turner of High Street Princeton died Friday in a Princeton hospital. He was a longtime Mercer and McDowell County resident and retired miner. He leaves wife Ethel of Detroit three brothers and one sister. Funeral at Pilgrim Baptist Crystal Wednesday at noon with burial in Buckingham Virginia. Flower bearers and calling hours announced.
Willard Miller 67 of Pilgrim KnobVa died at home Saturday after long illness. Survived by two daughters Evelyn Cook and Dorothy Meadows, one son Billy Miller, three brothers and seven grandchildren. Services at Ward Memorial Baptist Church with burial at Ward Cemetery. Buchanan County Funeral Home in Keen Mountain VA in charge. William Allen Hounshell 44 of Louisa KY formerly Rocky Gap VA died Monday in a Louisa hospital. Survived by widow Ann Harris Hounshell two sons David and George, sister Willie Cooke, brother Corbie Hounshell, two grandchildren. Service at Free Will Baptist Church Louisa with burial at Greenlawn Cemetery. Friends may call at Heston Funeral Home after 1 PM today.
Mack Bolen of Welch died Monday at a Welch hospital aged 61. Born at Odd he was the son of the late James and Nora Bolen and worked as a watchmaker for U S Jewelers in Welch. Graveside services will be noon Wednesday at Hannah Lilly Cemetery Odd with Rev Beecher Garretson officiating. Friends may call at Douglas Mortuary Welch today from 6 to 9 p.m.
W E Raines known as Jack Raines, 55, of Cedar Bluff Virginia, died Monday in a Richlands hospital after a short illness. Arrangements were completed at Tazewell Bluff, Virginia.
Mrs. Bertie Eva Gibson of Freeman died Sunday in a Bluefield hospital at 77. Born in Mount Airy North Carolina she had lived in Freeman and Bramwell 33 years and served as Bramwell Methodist Church choir director. Survived by son Raymond of Daniels two sisters and one brother nine grandchildren and a funeral today with pallbearers listed.
Leonard P. Cline aged 56 of Ikes Fork died Sunday night in a Welch hospital after a long illness. Born June 20, 1921, he was the son of Joseph and Lucy Cline. Survived by four brothers William, Dewey, McCleelai of Des Plaines, Ill., and David. two sisters Adeline Roberts of Cleveland and Magdaline Heninger of Cincinnati. Funeral services at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ernest Riffe home with Rev. Edgar Riffe and Rev. Graham Riffe. burial at Cline Cemetery. Friends may call after 3 p.m. at Ernest Riffe’s home. Fanning Funeral Home of Jaeger in charge.
The Wyoming County Sheriff’s Department investigates the disappearance of 22 year old Noel Dwayne Bishop of Bud Mountain Wyoming County. He was last seen Dec 23 about 3 p.m. a mile from his home wearing blue jeans a green CPO jacket and black boots. He is described as 511 tall 165 pounds brown eyes black hair with a heavy beard. Alert Team search efforts on the mountain have not found him and authorities ask anyone with information to contact police.
The United States spent about twelve years engaged in combat in Vietnam, making the conflict the longest military engagement in American history.
Charlie Chaplin will be mourned in a private Church of England funeral service in Corsier sur Vevey Switzerland. Chaplin 88 died Christmas morning in his sleep with his wife Oona and seven of their eight children at his side. The service is at 11 00 a m conducted by Rev Richard Thomason and burial will follow in the village cemetery perched above Lake Geneva.

Reverends officiated and burial followed at respective cemeteries with pallbearers named for several services.
William Dewey Mentz 70 of Welch a former West Virginia Legislator and longtime McDowell County resident died after a period of illness. He served in World War II and held multiple veteran and civic posts including American Legion commander state department commander 40 8 Society and Welch Chamber of Commerce president. His body was donated to West Virginia University Medical School and a memorial service will be announced. Memorial gifts are requested to charities or churches.
Severe winds sparked widespread outages across Southern California. In Bakersfield a 70 000 volt line downed by 60 mph gusts blacked out radio and TV stations but spared homes. Heavy rain triggered mudslides and road closures while Los Angeles saw nearly an inch of rain, lifting the season total to over four inches as the system expected to ease by Tuesday night.

A 32-year-old landscaper, Nikolai Wischnewsky of Pearl River New York, is charged with air piracy after hijacking Eastern Air Lines Flight 688 at Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport. He held about 15 passengers for 2 1/2 hours, claimed a bomb, and brandished a toy pistol, with negotiations leading to the release of most passengers. None were injured.
Cecil Thomas Carter a 47 year old Princeton businessman owner of Stag Clothing Store was found dead in the store basement at 4 p.m. by a nephew. Police report he shot himself in the chest with a revolver. no foul play suspected. Carter was active in local groups and had served in the U S Army. Burial at Oakwood Park Cemetery. Funeral services held at George W Seaver Chapel Princeton.
