Bloodshed mars Christmas celebrations around world

A grenade attack in Pakistan killed three worshippers at a village church near Lahore, while bombs rocked a church in eastern India and crowds faced barriers in Belgrade. In Bethlehem, Palestinian Christians held a Mass under Israeli control as tensions rose, with Latin Patriarch Sabbah urging hope amid hardship. Indonesian authorities seized fertilizer linked to a bomb plot, and security was tightened across several Christian sites in Indonesia and India.

Pope calls for peace in holiday address

Pope John Paul II urged peace in his Christmas Day Urbi et Orbi message from St. Peter's Basilica. He warned against expanding war in Iraq amid global fears and terrorism, calling for joint efforts to end violence in the Middle East and urging humanity to accept the Christmas message of peace. The 82 year old pope spoke with a tremulous voice as thousands listened in drizzle, with the pontiff driven through St. Peter's Square past a nativity scene and a tall Christmas tree.
