Senator donates legislative salary to charity in WV
Senator Truman Chafin of Mingo donated his legislative salary to charity, giving $15,000 to the Gazette Charities Christmas Fund in memory of Harley and Tyler Fitch, two children who died in a truck crash on April 23, 1999 near West Hamlin. The donation, made in his family’s name, follows prior gifts from Chafin to West Virginia causes. Gas prices fall as mild weather curbs heating demand, with national average $1.09 per gallon and West Virginia at $1.13.

Federal funds for West Virginia poorer students rise
West Virginia could gain about 81.1 million dollars in Title I funding for the current fiscal year under a broad education bill awaiting President Bush’s signature. The CRS analysis shows a 17 percent increase from 69.1 million last year, with allocations based on free and reduced lunch counts. Kanawha, McDowell, Jefferson, and Preston counties would see sizable boosts as the bill ties funding to test scores.
