Tourism funds boost Wheeling efforts to attract visitors
State officials say 13.5 million in tourism advertising funds come from 3 percent of video lottery profits at West Virginia race tracks. Wheeling Downs and Oglebay Resort share a 1.2 million grant for a campaign, while partners note new collaborations and themes spurred by the program. In a separate report, Virginia police say Oscar Junior McCauley, 24, was arrested in Jefferson County after escaping custody last November following a deputy gun theft and suspected Albemarle County crime.

West Virginia Guards respond to post 9 11 call up
West Virginians have long served in major wars and after September 11 about 1,000 National Guard troops were activated. Some are sent to Fort Knox and Fort Benning for training while others handle security duties across the state. By January six metal detectors and 14 security officers will guard the Capitol Complex. The change weighs little on daily life so far but may affect schools, businesses and agencies as call ups continue. Parents worry for Guardsmen like Christopher Rankin who could be sent to Afghanistan, adding to family nerves.
