President Bush gave holiday greetings as he left for Camp David Md praising the incoming Clinton team reporters and photographers. He declined questions citing 268 press conferences and wished everyone a merry Christmas. A Harris Poll shows clothes games and books top gifts for children with 77 percent planning clothes and 70 percent games.
On today’s calendar two events are listed. At noon the Community Christmas Tree Party will be held at the Bluefield Youth Center on Stadium Drive, Bluefield, with about 1,200 needy children receiving gifts. The event is sponsored by Bluefield Daily Telegraph on Tuesday, Jan. 5. At 6 30 p m the Board of Directors of Southern Highlands Community Mental Health Center will meet at the CMHC Welch Clinic.

An American mission in Somalia suffered a death as a State Department security team member was killed when an unarmored vehicle struck a land mine near Bardera. Three others were injured as U S troops prepared to advance with mine sweepers. The incident occurred while relocating from Baidoa ahead of a planned push.
The annual Community Christmas Tree Party begins at noon at the Bluefield Youth Center on Stadium Drive with Santa arriving at 12:30 pm to distribute gifts to about 1,200 children. Donations net $15,260 toward a $14,000 goal, with funds accepted at the Daily Telegraph offices or by mail to Community Christmas Tree, P.O. Box 1599, Bluefield WV 24701.
Today’s community event opens at noon with doors for ticket holders who receive a candy bar. Cecil Surratt and Don Whitt with band perform as Santa arrives at 12:30. At 1:00, doors open to the youth center annex. bags of toys fruit nuts and candy are handed out. Ticket deadline is 2:30. remaining bags distributed.
Nine year old Kia Musick a fifth grader at Spanishburg Elementary wrote to Santa asking for peace love for all and that everyone’s needs be met She describes her wish for homeless and sick to be cared for and says she believes one day peace on earth will come her parents praise her selfless message and she hopes to become a nurse links to her home in Mercer County and her roles as cheerleader and basketball player in the gifted program
Gary center announces an agreement between Hospice Care of Mercer County and McDowell Continuous Care Center of Gary to provide a full scope of hospice services at the 120 bed facility. Administrators and staff outlined benefits for residents and families facing terminal illness and noted the center now employs over 100 personnel.
Tazewell County residents shared memories of past Christmases. Airport manager James Bower recalled proposing in 1989 and a 1990 weathered flight to Cincinnati. Bluefield’s Jackie Hagerman remembered family visits from Panama. Dr. Stuart McGehee recalled a 1959 train set, family cheer, and the lesson that Christmas centers on giving. Greg Vanover called every Christmas memorable, unique as snowflakes.
