Deposition Read In Powers Trial In Georgetown

Governor Taylor’s deposition from 1903 was read again in the Caleb Powers case in Georgetown Kentucky. Judge Brown testified that James B. Howard was in London on January 29, 1900 and spoke with him. Taylor denied involvement in Goebel’s killing and rejected dictating Youtsey’s letter to Howard.

Ten-Year-Old Girl Struck Dead by Lightning at Home

A ten year old girl died at her cousin's home in Reids Station Georgia after being struck by lightning as she sat in a relative's lap. The incident occurred December 23 and is reported by local police.

Lightning Kills 10 Year Old at Bryant Home

Yesterday afternoon a stroke of lightning killed Ira Bryant, ten year old daughter of J D Bryant, and injured fifteen others during a neighbors gathering at the Bryant residence. The fatal strike struck during a song service and left one cousin unharmed.

Fell Under Wheels Conductor Syd Williams Dies

Conductor Syd Williams of Vivian aged 22 was killed at Alnwick while attempting to grasp a moving car handle on a freight train. The handle broke, he was thrown under the wheels and cut in two, dying almost instantly. He leaves a wife and one child and came from Christiansburg Virginia. He was a member of the O R C No 538 and his remains will be cared for by the railroad order. Interment likely in Christiansburg.

Doddridge Akers Dies at 67 from Pulmonary Troubles

Doddridge Akers father of Councilman Jerry Akers died at his daughter Mrs. Luther Bailey’s home near Ada last Sunday evening after six. He was 67 and had lived in the county since coming from Bland. He leaves eight children six sons and two daughters all living. Interment occurred at Bland except for two sons unable to attend.

The Denver Convention League sent $25,000 to Democratic national convention chairman Thomas Taggart at French Lick Indiana. The remaining $75,000 will be delivered in three equal installments on January 22 February 22 and March 22.

Former Bluefielder Sues Roanoke Doctors

Fred J. Thompson a commission broker sues Dr C G Cannady and A Stone in Roanoke corporation court for 10000 damages. He alleges unjust arrest on insanity charges by the doctors, leading to confinement in Roanoke jail and a trip to the Marion asylum where he was discharged as sane. Thompson, once a Bluefield resident, blames the actions for harm to his business and reputation.

Murder in East End Ends with King's Fatal Shot

Tom King was killed about 6 o clock yesterday in Vaughan's can near the east end bridge after a dispute with Frank Johnson over two colored women. A mob of witnesses followed to the shanty where Johnson shot King in the abdomen. King collapsed after running about 25 yards. Johnson fled toward the bridge and remained at large as police pursued him. The quarrel began over two women, one of whom is jailed.

344 BODIES RECOVERED AT MONONGAH MINE EXPLOSION

Fairmont West Virginia December 22. President C W Watson of Fairmont Coal Co reports Belmont has asked to let French mine experts examine Monongah mine conditions after the December 6 explosion. U S Geological Survey Chief Joseph A Holland and Chief Chemist Professor Lord are on site. The inquest opens January 2. Bodies recovered to date total 344.

Medals Planned for Panama Isthmus Service Voters

In Washington on December 2, 1909 President Roosevelt announced medals of suitable character for all U S citizens who served two years on the Isthmus of Panama in government service and rendered satisfactory conduct.
