Destructive Wreck at Shawsville Tunnel disrupts rail service
A major Norfolk and Western wreck occurred Sunday at the Shawsville tunnel on the Radford division. An eastbound freight derailed near the tunnel, cars piled on both tracks, and fire ensued. Cattle cars burned, and wreckage delayed traffic for hours with No. 3 and other trains rerouted via Radford, Columbus, and Welch.

Three men convicted in Tazewell housebreaking case

Death of Allen Brown in accidental gun discharge
Allen Brown, a prominent Bineketd citizen and city sergeant, died in an accidental shooting at Give Jenn in the C O field. The pistol discharged when it struck a washstand, piercing the heart. Brown fell dead, with funeral plans in Narrows and a line of Elks traveling to attend.

Engineer Killed in Norfolk and Western Collision Near Farmville
John Parish, a noted Norfolk and Western Railway engineer, was instantly killed near Farmville Va when his head struck a water tank as he looked from his cab while the engine traveled at high speed. The engine ran on a distance before the fireman found Parish dead. Parish’s home is in Appomattox and he leaves a wife and five children.

Died Far From Home Rufus M Ward Passes Away
Rufus M Ward aged 14 died at 4 50 last night at Capt Dr B Baldwin's Summers street home while visiting his niece in California bound family life in Tazewell county Virginia. He had been ill two weeks confined ten days and died with household members unable to aid. He was native of Tazewell county and survived by three sons and one daughter in California. Burial will be Maple Park cemetery with funeral services this afternoon.

Martinez California December 22 eighteen deaths have been recorded from a rear end crash between the Stockton Myer and Owl train of the Southern Pacific at Byron. Many wounded were sent to the Southern Pacific Hospital San Francisco five died en route. Twenty two wounded reached the hospital with two more expected to die.
