Ashland Oil sees moderate first quarter loss amid low refining margins
Ashland Oil Inc cites depressed refining margins and maintenance turnarounds at Canton and Catlettsburg as reasons for a likely moderate loss for the fiscal first quarter ending Dec 31. The firm notes demand for gasoline and heating oil was strong in October and November, but crude and product price volatility and Persian Gulf disruption hurt margins. The company remains cautiously optimistic for fiscal 1991. GE unit sale: Amax Inc completes $515 million plus net working capital purchase of GE's Ladd Petroleum Corp and will operate it as a wholly owned subsidiary until future plans are set. Government deficit widens: November total budget shortfall hits $48.05 billion, up from $29.73 billion a year earlier.
