A rain-weakened roadbed collapsed under the Illinois Central Chickasaw near Belleville causing nine cars to plunge down an embankment. Two passengers were killed Jennie Covell 70 and Henry Hudson 67. Thirty four injured with 18 hospitalized. The train was en route from St Louis to Memphis and New Orleans.
