London reports that German gains in Poland appear limited as Allied offensives in Belgium and France progress slowly. Russians claim still-fragile front lines with counterattacks and prisoner releases. German minefields and coastal raiders threaten Allied shipping amid ongoing battles along the Vistula, Bzura, and Przemysg fronts.
The British troops reportedly lost several captured trenches near Neuve Chapelle as Indian corps advanced toward Richebourg L Avoue. Enemy activity was noted near Thiepval and Lihons where a detachment was surprised and mowed down. No notable incidents from the Oise to the Vosges. The French war office cited December 15 events in Belgium and ongoing regrouping of territory won from the enemy.
W C Cleary town clerk of Haverstraw and Rockland county Democratic leader was acquitted of murder in the first degree for killing Eugene M Newman, his son in law. The verdict led to a courtroom celebration by supporters and a nervous reaction from Newman's wife.
Detectives recovered $8,161 of the $12,660 taken by Frank G. Hohl in two bank raids. The remaining $4,500, believed mailed to T. Co. Wright of Louisville, could not be located. Washington manager Griffith announces Walter Johnson signed for three years at 12 500 per season with the Americans. Johnson claims the option in last year’s deal is binding and will return to Washington. Federal League president Gilmore disputes the option's binding nature.
Lee McClung former United States treasurer dies in a London hospital after a three months siege of typhoid fever. Relatives learn of his death by cable from his brother J M MeChing in Knoxville. He previously served as Yale University treasurer and held roles with the St Paul and Duluth Railroad and the Southern Railroad. His body to be brought to Knoxville by his brother.
Washington report on December 19 says Frederick W. Stevens for J. P. Morgan & Co. testified that Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton faced 24.807 million dollars in obligations and was steered into receivership before Morgan's Erie acquisition. He cited altered year-end surpluses, 1916 stock value prospects, and substantial loans to Pere Marquette now in default.
A 1905 financial action commits twelve million dollars or more to relieve Erie Railroad from obligations tied to the Cincinnati Hamilton and Dayton purchase. The measure directs funds toward retiring obligations and stabilizing the line’s financial footing.

New York December 19 The winter exhibition at the American Fine Arts Society galleries features a nationwide collection from the National Academy of Design running to January 17. Prizes include Carnegie 500 for outstanding American painting, Proctor 200 for best portrait, Isador medal for best fleure composition, and Barnett 200 for top sculpture by a sculptor under 35. A jury of prominent artists will judge the awards.

Edward Echols longtime Virginia politician and banker died after a long illness in Staunton. Born in Union West Virginia he studied at Washington and Lee University and the University of Virginia. He served in the legislature 1883 to 1889 and 1897 to 1901 and led the finance committee as senate president of the National Valley Bank. He leaves wife Margaret Young two children Harriet and John and stepmother Mary Echols.
West Virginia sees cloudy and colder conditions Sunday with possible snow or rain Monday. Virginia expects fair skies and cooler Sunday followed by cloudy conditions Monday.
Washington dispatch reports a heated House session over the annual postal appropriation bill. Republicans and Democrats clashed over postmaster salaries and rural service reforms, with Representatives Heflin and Moon nearly coming to blows before colleagues intervened. Moon apologized for any offense and offered to withdraw offensive language.
An opinion by Attorney General Gregory received by Secretary McAdoo states the Federal Reserve Board is an independent government body not under the Treasury. It will have status equal to the Interstate Commerce Commission and be treated as a coordinate part of the government.

Reports from Petrograd say German reserves and pushes in the Vistula region near the East Prussian frontier have been slowed by new Soviet actions. Unofficially Lodz is said to have been evacuated as of the latest operations. The war office in Moscow confirms Austro German efforts along the left bank of the Vistula are repulsed, with the southern Craiow front remaining decisive.
Atlanta judge N. W. Newman refused the writ of habeas corpus for Frank, condemned to hang January 22 for the April 1918 murder. Attorneys sought an appeal to the U S Supreme Court. decision to grant or deny was postponed to Monday. The appeal faces a two year wait unless expedited by applications.
Budapest paper reports an armored supply train en route from Lemberg to the Carpathians carrying munitions and food has been blown up. The incident, if true, suggests Russian lines of communication to forces in the Carpathians have been attacked successfully.
Washington December 19 officials from the state and commerce departments say the senate will take up reconsideration of the ratification resolution next week. They warn that reservations asserting U S right to higher ship standards could nullify the treaty. Secretary Bryan discussed the matter with Secretary Redfield and others. Senator Stone later told President Wilson the ratification resolution practically nullifies the convention.
In Lynchburg on December 19 Captain Charles I Adams 65 a former consul to Cadiz Spain was fatally crushed when an elevator began moving while he attempted entry at the People's National Bank building. His body fell to the shaft and hung on the cables lighting the cars.
Howard Johnson of South Richmond, age twenty, despondent over ill health, fired a bullet into his right breast this morning. Told by a physician he had less than six months to live, he is in a hospital in critical condition. The incident occurred in Richmond, Virginia, on December 19.
A dispatch from Douglas Arizona says R. E. Dunn and Thoms Francis were British subjects, not Americans, when killed near Nacozari Sonora. The British consul at Douglas investigates.
A fully loaded Missouri gift ship will depart New York harbor on or about New Year’s Day carrying foodstuffs and clothing to war stricken Europe. The voyage results from Charity Day efforts in Missouri where every city and town participated.
Lieut. Gov. W. P. ONeill and twelve other Indiana officials and employees were acquitted by Judge J. T. Markey in Indianapolis criminal court. They faced indictments from December 4 for signing and presenting illegal state claims.
