Reports from Peersburg and Baltic provinces describe peasant famine fueling unrest and revolts. Nobles face coercion after a petition to revoke martial law, while Riga’s stability is questioned. The government offers better rations and pay to soldiers to bolster loyalty.
A large group of coal operators from Kanawha and New River meet in Washington to press Chesapeake and Ohio for 4000 contracted cars and adjust allocation. Kanawha seeks parity with New River, which currently gets 55 percent of cars. Conference includes President Stevens General Manager Doyle and Rep Gainer hosting at the Arlington.
In New York a six story factory blaze at 58 Center Street caused $60,000 damage. Firemen on the fourth and fifth floors faced a back draft that forced them to aim hoses from the street up to their comrades on the escapes. Water saved the trapped men who descended to safety once the draft subsided.
New Orleans reports Corneling Vanderbilt Washington a 45 year old Negro farmer near Durant Mississippi who suddenly turned white with only small spots remaining and preserved negro features. He and nearby neighbors are turning white in a mysterious change thought to spread locally.
An explosion at the Charles W. Shonk sign manufacturing shop in Chicago killed Fire Lieutenant Bascett and injured two workers as walls collapsed. An overtaxed boiler caused the blast. About a hundred employees were in the building. all escaped. Loss estimated at 75000 dollars.
Reading Pa December 19 three men were killed when the boiler exploded on an engine pulling a fright train. All three were badly scalded and burned and the locomotive was completely wrecked.
A. Crockett Davidson died at his Nemours home in Abbe Valley yesterday at one o'clock after a short pneumonia illness. The 52 year old, a longtime Bluefield leader and jurist, left a wife Lizzie Miller and six children. Funeral services will be at First Baptist Church with Rev. P. C. Clark supervising, and interment at Walnut Grove Cemetery.
Chicago reports secrecy surrounds a planned nationwide move by five railroad brotherhoods to organize employees against Roosevelt era rate legislation. They seek to influence Congress and may send a lobby to Washington while denying railroad coercion. A national meeting is expected with city and union representatives.
Columbus Ohio December 19 A Chicago Avenue Church of Christ pastor Rev D J Good told parishioners Saturday night this would be his last unpaid salary. Sunday he began work behind a counter as a men clothing store clerk to meet home payments if the church cannot pay when due he will seek other work.
Webster City Iowa December 19 In his haste to serve divorce papers on the sheriff C A Near dashed from the courthouse through an adjacent lot and struck a clothesline will topple him. A fragment of his false teeth tore loose and lodged in his throat before a physician relieved him. The sheriff then served notice of suit.
In Winsted Connecticut on December 19 the transfer of land to Mrs John McGuinness is delayed due to a missing decimal point in the Torrington deed. The deed should read 1.16 chains front but the copy shows 115 chains, a difference of over five miles.
A British Board of Trade report shows Great Britain increased coal output by about 5 million tons in three years while the United States fell by nearly 5.9 million tons. Germany remains third, with global production around 790 million tons annually.
Reported unrest in London over rising unemployment as winter tightens. Eyewitnesses claim riotous demonstrations threaten order with thousands marching and police prepared, including uniformed guards at Hyde Park barracks for possible emergencies.
Reading Kansas December 19 a passenger train on the Santa Fe line wrecked near Lang. The engineer and express messenger were killed and several passengers injured. A reward of 5000 dollars was offered by General Manager Harley for the arrest and conviction of the culprit responsible.

Attorney Joan M Auderaonie releases a letter from Dr Kessler head of the Huntington clinic stating Judge L L Chambers of the circuit court is recovering well with no tuberculosis symptoms. He has been out of the hospital three weeks and aims to be fully well to resume judicial duties as he rents a home in Huntington.
A Boone Coal Land Company tract of 25 000 to 80 000 acres in Boone County was sold to Powell and his partners of Pennsylvania. The land includes Cedar Grove No 2 gas and No 5 coal seams with over five feet of coal. The deal, valued at about a million dollars, is expected to boost mining operations and add valuable properties to regional development.
Grace Church seeks to ensure all Bluefield children receive a Santa visit. Rev Thomas Pridiy asks families in need to inform him so St Nicholas can bring cheer to each home on Christmas Eve.
Deputy Marshal R B Wheeley and posse captured six moonshiners at a distillery hidden in a large cave in Russell County Virginia. Those captured were Keith Ebert Salyer George Dinges Rod Cietel William Cistel and Jeff Mead. They were brought to jail for processing.

Guests included congressmen diplomats and Army Navy officials. The reception followed at the Hotel Gotham and the couple plan a wedding tour before settling in the city.
A New York Central passenger train collided with a New Haven local near a tunnel outside New Rochelle after a signaling misunderstanding. Two unidentified people were killed and many injured as emergency crews arrived and victims were extricated from the wreck.
Serious rioting broke out in Shanghai on December 19 sparked by a trial in the mixed court. A German consul was store d yesterday and the American vice consul wounded. Foreign residents face attacks as ships land troops and volunteers are called. All shops were closed.
