Rains ease drought across most of the South
A federal drought monitor shows December rains lifted drought across Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas, ending extreme or exceptional categories regionwide. Some western Carolinas and parts of Georgia remain severely dry, while Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia and West Virginia stay in moderate drought. The drought relief may take time to restore base flows in springs and creeks. Sod farmer Pete Winford faced irrigation costs, restrictions, and a drop in homebuilding demand amid the drought.
