Warner proposes pay raises and food tax cut for Virginia
Gov. Mark R. Warner unveiled amendments seeking 3 percent pay raises for state workers teachers and college faculty next fall and a one year 4 percent to 2.5 percent reduction in the grocery sales tax by July 2007. He would allocate 108 million for raises and forfeit about 157 million in grocery tax revenues. The plan funds health care and Medicaid costs and keeps no new long term programs while stressing fiscal conservatism amid a projected 1 billion surplus.
