Virginia Roanoke area residents oppose I-73 bid
In Roanoke and Martinsville area hearings Virginia DOT heard from more than 2,200 people on I-73 environmental impacts. Four Virginia routes contend with 1.1 to 1.35 billion dollars and the loss of up to 707 homes and 147 businesses. Opponents warn of scenic damage and habitat loss while proponents cite congestion relief. The decision rests with the Commonwealth Transportation Board, possibly in April.

Snowy weather eases as winds subside across region
Beverly Crenshaw reported high winds caused power outages and broken poles but road conditions remained mostly clear. A light snow dusting fell on Charlestown with forecasts of up to four inches in northern and eastern mountains. Temperatures could dip to seven degrees in Pocahontas County and stay under 15 in southern counties and Charleston. Road crews salted and sanded by mid afternoon. The National Weather Service predicts partly cloudy skies tonight with mid to upper 20s, and Tuesday clouds with a 40 percent chance of rain or snow and highs of 40 to 45.
