Virginia Gas Tax Hike Considered by State Officials
RICHMOND AP A gas tax hike averaging about 7 cents a gallon would be required to fund a high priority road program approved by the State Highway and Transportation Commission. The plan needs General Assembly approval for new revenues. Officials warn of a $1.1 billion loss in federal funds through 1988 without increases, with maintenance funds declining after 1984 85. King says legislators may adopt a percentage based rise rather than a per gallon tax. He notes past 4 percent proposals were eroded by inflation and urges support for higher license and truck taxes. The incoming Robb administration’s stance on taxes remains noncommittal.
