Viet Cong Attack On Saigon Marks First City Hit In Months

Viet Cong gunners launched a single 122mm rocket into central Saigon just after midnight wounding four civilians and causing widespread outages. The attack, the first on the city since August, followed nine overnight shellings with Saigon law authorities and U.S. forces reporting activity near Bu Dop as North Vietnamese troops massed nearby. More clashes and air support continued as South Vietnamese forces fought to defend key positions along the Cambodian border.

State auto insurance premiums to rise average 14.9 percent

Charleston AP report says about 200000 motorists in the state may see average premium hikes of 14.9 percent with up to 25 percent in four counties. The Insurance Rating Board, representing about 100 stock companies, enacted the statewide increase effective Wednesday.

Laird cites 25,000 draft cut from Vietnam pullout

Defense Secretary Melvin Laird says the 50 000 troop withdrawal allows a 10 percent draft reduction next year and a total draft call of about 225 000, down 65 000 from 1969. He plans a February trip to Vietnam to assess battlefield conditions as North Vietnam may increase offensives around Tet.

Mail Fraud Trial Set In Bluefield

Marshall G. West a former assistant attorney general and David W. George of Pineville face a U S District Court trial in Bluefield on February 9 for mail fraud. Judge Sidney Christie set the date after pleas of not guilty. A warrant was issued for Richard Morgan of Pineville who failed to appear.

Two Concord Coeds Die in Route 20 Crash

Two Concord College coeds were killed and five others injured, one critically, when a two car collision on State Route 20 near Athens halted holiday plans. Victims include Cecelia Gattuso and Patricia Ann McGraw. One driver, Carol Godfrey, remained in critical condition.
