Jury System Change Sought by Virginia Attorneys
The executive committee of the Virginia Association of Commonwealth's Attorneys aims to push the 1968 General Assembly to let juries decide only guilt in criminal trials. Judges would issue presentence reports, guiding punishment with juries informed but not determining sentences. The group also seeks lowering the age for indecent liberties cases to 18 and opposes changes to recidivist and indeterminate sentencing. A model search and seizure statute will be prepared for the assembly.
