Halifax N S Dec 16 The elections in Nova Scotia yesterday produced a sweeping Liberal victory. Liberal candidates won in all seven counties where elections were held for the legislature.
Passengers from the Kwan tung peninsula confirm Japanese reports of the sinking of Russian warships at Port Arthur. The loss implies Japan may abandon the fortress risks. 208 meter hill captured with heavy casualties, while main forts remain unoccupied. Three ammunition laden steamers reached Port Arthur recently.
In Boston on December 16 Col W Greene of New York, head of the Greene Copper Mining Co, at breakfast at the Touraine. Thomas W Lawson sent his card to Greene after calling Lawson a liar. They met, exchanged smiles, and moved to a fifth floor suite.
Tangiers December 16 Raisuli the brigand chief boldly raided a caravan within Tangiers town. He earlier attacked a caravan five miles outside the city taking eleven prisoners and many mules. He then returned to Tangiers, released the prisoners, and targeted men not among them.
Bishop C P Anderson described Chicago as a fertile field for mission work citing 7000 saloons and rapid population growth. He warned the city’s churches to wake up as crime rose with 17000 boy prisoners and 85 percent of juvenile criminals lacking religious training.
A longshore man in New York after heavy drinking entered a basement on Twenty third street removed all his clothes and used a crowbar to smash nineteen plate glass windows in the Metropolitan Life Insurance building. A cabman finally trussed him with a blanket and police captured him.
Georgetown county jail was entered by bold burglars while the sheriff and family dined. They took a gold watch and $24 belonging to the sheriff’s daughter. The burglars forced an entrance to the jail and ransacked upstairs rooms. no clue to the perpetrator.
Paris Dec 16 The Hull commission’s work on the firing on British trawlers by the Russian Baltic fleet is expected to begin in early January. The fifth member of the commission will be chosen next week.
