President Clinton unveiled a $60 billion package aimed at boosting middle class incomes through a $500 tax credit per child under 13 for families earning up to $60,000 and a reduced credit for households with $60,000 to $75,000. The plan also offers a $10,000 annual tuition deduction for college or postsecondary education, phasing out after $100,000 income.
At a public hearing in Tazewell County residents voiced views on the New River Valley Regional Jail. The county board reaffirmed Tazewell as the proposed site while clarifying that regional authority would oversee both local and regional facilities to save money.
Princet on and Bluefield Salvation Army units plan to aid over 1,000 children this Christmas with angel trees at Wal-Mart and Hills Department Store. Cards on the trees list a child’s wishes and winter needs. donors buy gifts and return them to hosting stores. Bluefield reports 1,292 requests and a toy shortage as agencies compare applications to maximize gifts.
Donations on Thursday lifted the drive to 9187 dollars with 482 added and 1100 local children to be served at the December 24 Bluefield Youth Center party. Contributions may be delivered to the Daily Telegraph lobby or mailed to Community Christmas Tree Daily Telegraph P.O. Box 1599 Bluefield West Virginia 24701. Tree donors include Warner and Phyllis Graham with 25 dollars in memory of Papa Odell Bennett and Roger Christian from Mr and Mrs A W Christian.
The Bluefield Union Mission via Jail Ministry runs Toys for Forgotten Tots to brighten Christmas for inmates' kids in Southern Regional Jail Beckley McDowell County Jail and Tazewell County Jail. Mercer County inmates' families are served too with some children far away in other states.
In Bluefield a break-in damaged the Salvation Army Citadel's toy distribution setup as volunteers prepared bags. Entry came via a broken window. a TV, kitchen door, and a phone cord were damaged or stolen. Capt. John Blevins and wife Diane monitored the site. Patrolman M A Beck investigates.
