Artificial Christmas trees gain dominance in U S market
In 1990 real trees held about half of 70 million sales while last year artificial trees accounted for 70 percent of 79.5 million. Waddell Tree Farm in Beckley along with about 15 000 growers nationwide notes rising demand for artificial trees though real trees remain popular at farms. Growth requires time effort and costs including insurance and pesticides. Fraser firs and Scotch pines are among top choices with Frasers prized for aroma and needle retention. Tree farming peaks between Thanksgiving and December 25.

The class found higher end chains may not locate in Bluefield due to population, income, and traffic constraints, though local owners suggested leveraging demographics through targeted strategies.
