Western Coal Production Could Triple In Next Decade
Washington AP reports a congressional OTA forecast that Western coal output from federal leases could more than triple in ten years driven by electricity demand in the West Midwest and South Central regions. Production from Powder River Basin states Wyoming Montana dominates and 99 percent of federal reserves lie in those areas. Environmental rules unlikely to block expansion. overseas and synthetic fuel markets also affect demand. Transportation costs remain a major price factor for out of state coal shipments.
