State budget plans 10 percent cuts and county aid seek
The state proposes 10 percent cuts in the Department of Education budget while preserving the school aid formula for 55 counties. David Stewart notes reductions aim to maintain quality, with central office revisions but no overall K 12 cut. The department seeks $67 million more for county aid to cover insurance and retirement costs, and lawmakers debate using a 1.5 percent levy. House Speaker Kiss says 10 percent cuts are agreed to from a reserve fund, while the Supreme Court seeks $6 million for costs tied to a new family court system.
