Tech stocks rally lifts Nasdaq above 3,000 on rate-cut hopes

Markets gained as rate cut expectations buoy tech shares while blue chips paused in thin trading. Nasdaq rose to 3,015.10, led by Intel and other techs. Microsoft climbed, Yahoo! slid to a 52 week low amid softer online ad demand. Dow and S&P also rose but defensives lagged.

Antitrust Regulators May Decide On AOL Time Warner Deal

Regulators could rule this week on the 162 billion AOL Time Warner merger after an FTC hearing set for Thursday. The Washington Post says three to four commissioners may approve, with European clearance already granted and FCC waiting on FTC’s antitrust outcome.

AOL Forms Partnership With Switchboard For Yellow Pages

AOL announced a deal to provide a new Yellow Pages service to some online members via Switchboard Inc. Switchboard will supply all technology, initially covering CompuServe and Netscape. AOL holds a 3 percent stake in Switchboard and may increase it. ePresence and Viacom own about 40 and 30 percent respectively. AirTran safety image lingers after near misses in Atlanta despite no injuries.
