Macaulay Culkin shines in uneasy Paris stage work
AP review notes Culkin, now 20, plays a 15 year old in Carl in Madame Melville at Vaudeville Theater. The show presents a bleak tale of two damaged souls finding release through sex set in 1960s Paris. Culkin’s doe eyed, androgynous performance draws attention though critics say the production and plot feel tawdry and uneven. The dramatist Nelson is praised for exile themes and strong past works, but the piece relies on controversial sexual humor that complicates its intent.
