A Cuban refugee, Oscar Poveda, 38, who owned a sugar plantation in Camaguey, resettles in Edgewater New Jersey with his family. Sergeant and Wife Die in Pike County Plane Crash

Air Force Sergeant Jewell Stanaland, 34, and his wife Geraldine, 31, were killed when a private plane crashed near Mullins Fork in Pike County near the Kentucky West Virginia line while en route for a Christmas visit. Their three children, 8, 7, and 3, were injured and hospitalized in Williamson West Virginia in fair condition. A witness said the plane struck a power line, rolled and hit a mountainside as light rain fell at the late afternoon crash site.

Greek freighter Costantis crew refuse to spend night aboard

The British Coast Guard reported crewmen of the crippled Greek freighter Costantis refused to stay on the ship as rescue preparations began. Capt Geoffrey Marr warned abandoning the ship in the wintry storm would be dangerous. The West German tug Atlantic and Dutch tug Utrecht stood by with RAF planes overhead. Three crewmen went overboard on Thursday. one drowned, one missing, one rescued by another vessel.

Man Charged In Huntington Knifing

A Huntington woman Cora Baer about 35 was stabbed to death in her apartment Friday. Homer Woodard 4 released Thursday after 10 days on a trespass charge faced murder charges. He listed the same apartment building as his address and was arrested about 30 minutes after discovery of the body. An unnamed neighbor called the landlord Homer Bloss who found the body.

Giles County Redistricting Hearing Indefinite

A Giles County Circuit Court hearing on a September 1965 redistricting petition remains indefinite as Judge W L Sexton considers appointing a commission to study the proposal. The petition by Pearisburg attorney J L Dillon argues voters lack full participation in local government and board of supervisors elections. It lists district populations: Narrows 6272 6.4 percent, Newport 558 5.6 percent, Pearisburg 4706 27.3 percent, Pembroke 3234 18.8 percent, Walker's Creek 3049 11.9 percent, signed by 150 voters across all districts.

State Toll On Highways Rises To 446 This Year

State police reported Friday that 446 people have been killed on state highways this year, compared with 433 deaths in the same period last year.

Woman Injured in Wise County Crash Dies in Norton Hospital

Virginia Boyd, 57, of Dunbar, West Virginia, died December 8 in Norton Virginia hospital from injuries suffered in a one vehicle crash near Wise County on November 21. She was a passenger in a car driven by Corbin G. Adams of Norton, whose vehicle left Rt. 603, struck a tree, and went off the road.

Contract Let For Coal Cleaning Plant at Island Creek

A contract for a 175 ton per hour fine coal cleaning plant at Island Creek Coal Co. Coal Mountain No. 9 Mine in Wyoming County near the Norfolk and Western Railway has been awarded to J. O. Lively Manufacturing and Equipment Co. Beckley. The plant will operate by mid 1966 as an adjunct to the current coarse coal cleaning facility, raising total capacity to 350 tons per hour with Deister tables flotation cells centrifugal and thermal dryers thickeners vacuum filters vibrating screens and related equipment.

Fire equipment is back at Northside station

Bluefield Fire Department personnel and equipment had been split since June 11, with part stationed in the Harry Hardware Building during the Mercer Street Bridge tear-down. With the new bridge opening this week, the temporary Princeton Avenue post is being moved back to the Northside Fire Station on Roanoke Street.
