North Carolina remains No 1 with 41 first place votes to Kansas 34 and Kentucky 23 as the trio lead the first AP poll of the season based on games through Saturday. West Virginia enters the top ten with a 2 0 record after easy wins.

Los Angeles December 9 Don Newcombe signed a contract to pitch for the Los Angeles Dodgers next year at an estimated salary of 30000. Assistant general manager E J Bavisi announced from New York confirming the inked deal. Newcombe won 11 games and lost 12 last season and issued only 33 walks in 199 innings. He becomes the sixth Dodger to sign joining Pee Wee Reese Duke Snider Roy Campanella Junior Gilliam and Gino Cimoli.
Montcalm Generals trailed early but rallied to beat the Matoaka Indians 73-70. Vadis Hedrick scored 33 points to lead all scorers, joined by Thomas Pickett with 17 and Jerry Preservati guiding Matoaka. Billy Godfrey added 16 for Matoaka, leaving Montcalm at 3-1 and Matoaka at 0-2.
In Charleston on December 9 the State Supreme Court postponed the hearing over selecting the Class AA high school football champion until December 21. Weirton and West Fairmont had been barred from the title game by an appellate ruling, which allowed the contest to proceed and Weirton won 19 to 12. Big Creek supporters argue their school deserved the title.
Leander Howell scored 19 as Bluefield State beat North Carolina A&T 58 to 54 at Arter Hall. Preston Harrison and Preacher Galloway added 10 points each to give the Blues a 30-25 halftime edge, then held on despite a close second half. The Blues next host Winston-Salem at Arter Hall.
Greenbrier College powered past Bluefield 96 63 as Johnny Demarest led with 23 points while Scrappy Compton added 24 for Bluefield. Pete Watts paced Bluefield with 14 as Greenbrier won the season tilt.
Bobby Jordan of VMI and Carroll Dale of Virginia Tech were honored as outstanding back and lineman of the year by the Roanoke Touchdown Club. Jordan led VMI to an undefeated season and the Southern Conference title, while Dale starred as an end for Virginia Tech.
Detroit announces one year contracts for head coach George Wilson and six assistants ahead of end of season. The move follows Wilson stepping in last August after Buddy Parker’s resignation and comes as the Lions defend the Western Conference title.
