Flood Projects Start Under Mood Control Program

Washington reports Army engineers say all mood control flood projects costing 24.9 million dollars will begin within five or six weeks. Roosevelt allotted about 5 million to 15 projects, with remaining funds from later appropriations. Construction depends on relief labor, staff hiring, and local funds for rights of way. West Virginia towns Ceredo Kenova and Huntington receive 590000 900000 and 1310000 respectively. Other Ohio river valley communities seek funds. engineers expect more appropriations next session.

Peters to Lead Radford State Teachers College

Dr D W Peters will assume as president of Radford State Teachers College on January 1 succeeding Dr J F McConnell whose resignation took effect November 15. Peters, born November 21, 1889 in Franklin County, is a Roanoke College graduate and holds MA and PhD degrees from Columbia University.

Slain Man's Burial Set for Saturday

Harold Jones a auto mechanic from Virginia Rides was shot and fatally injured on November 23. He will be buried Saturday morning at Maple Hill cemetery with burial expenses covered by Tazewell county. Services will be held at the grave. Jones was found in a culvert on the Clarence Hale farm on Palls Mills road last Saturday afternoon by Hale children driving cows. Coy Asbury of Bluefield Virginia confessed to the shooting and is jailed in Tazewell county. His wife Ola Asbury is held as a material witness.

Skeet Shooters to Meet Sunday at Welch Skeet Club

Skeet shooters from across the region are set for a Sunday championship at the Welch Skeet club grounds on Belcher mountain. The all day event will classify contestants into five classes with a winner’s kitty and prizes based on 50 30 and 20 percent for first second and third. Officials report ample ammunition targets and refreshments and invite public safety groups and neighboring clubs to attend. A revival runs Sunday with services at 10 a m noon at the Carter hotel and 7 30 p m at the church.

Funeral for Mrs John T Steele Held in English

Mrs Breele Steele of English dies Tuesday night after eleven years there. Funeral at the local Presbyterian church Saturday at 1 pm conducted by C E S with Welch chapter of Eastern Star assisting. Burial at Woodlawn Cemetery. She leaves a husband and a twelve year old daughter Mary Littleman Steele. Pallbearers listed.

Former Welch Resident Maggie Swicegood Dies in Danville

Mrs. Maggie Swicegood a former Welch resident died Monday in a Danville hospital from pneumonia after surgery. Born May 2 1904 in Freeman W Va she was the daughter of Mr and Mrs Staley and lived with her husband Arthur Swicegood in Danville for ten years where he worked as a funeral director. Impressive Evanglist Revival Services Tonight at Welch

Rev G K Patty pastor of First Methodist Welch announces full congregation will attend the 10 o clock morning service as part of a two week revival. Evanglist Rev Sullins Dosser will preach on Carry a Little Honey and Rev I will lead a cross themed service at 7 30 tonight.

Red Cross activity reported for McDowell county November

McDowell county Red Cross executive secretary Mrs. Sally Payne released November activities showing 11 Home Service cases handled 2 ex-service 3 service 5 Civilian and 2 highway first aid stations set up. Junior work reached 2307 children with 18 schools enrolled. A roll call rally red cross flags and splints produced by Welch High School and a large thermometer on the courthouse lawn marked the month. The chapter held meetings with Kiwanis Rotary and UMWA plus an executive committee gathering.

Max Hicks 55 Dies After Hospital Admission

Big Sandy resident Max Hicks died late Wednesday night after being brought to a local hospital for cancer treatment. He was a native of the county and had spent his entire life here. Surviving him are his wife and seven children.

Capell man held on murder count in Welch case

Howard C. Hayton, 22, of Canels, died after a fight with Milton Lockhart at Capers. Lockhart, Capers area, was arrested by Deputy Sheriff J. Brindley on a murder charge and held in McDowell county jail pending hearing. Autopsy cited a brain blood clot.

Six County youths join army for Fort Thomas duty

Six McDowell county men and one Virginian leave Welch for Fort Thomas to enter U S army. Sgts W Brown and G McKoran enlisted the applicants on Wednesday afternoon. Also noted is a separate item about a woman from Six County joining the Presbyterian church and events in her family.

Junior Music Club Meeting in Appalachian Community Room

The Junior Music club for piano pupils of Mrs Ima McClaren Swope will meet at the Appalachian Community room this evening at 7 oclock with Campbell Henderson hosting. Members are to vote on changing the meeting place. The weekly recreational hour at Welch Presbyterian Church is cancelled this Friday due to a party, with plans to resume next week.
