State to require preapproval of bridge demolition plans
West Virginia officials will start reviewing bridge demolition plans before work begins next year. A Fayette County man died when a temporary span collapsed into the Tug Fork river during dismantling. The $6.9 million project near Saeger involved Battle Ridge Cos. of Belle. Kanawha County DOT says engineer certification will be required in the new rule, possibly by Jan. 1. Local industry groups welcomed the safety push and have formed tasks forces to shape recommendations for bid documents.
